Veronica Mars, 3.12: There’s Got to Be a Morning After Pill

Ah yes, the scene where I kind of hated Veronica. Madison didn’t roofie her! Madison was being set up to be raped, and accidentally got out of it by spitting in HER roofied drink, and giving it to Veronica. So Veronica’s blaming Madison for any of her rape? is gross. Not to mention the fact that Logan wasn’t dating Veronica at the time, and had no expectation of ever doing so again. Did he want to again? Parts of him? sure!. Should he live the rest of his life planning on it maybe happening? No. So Logan had a sad, drunken hook-up over Christmas with someone he hates, so for himself, I can see why Logan would love to forget it ever happened. Though Logan did in fact tell Veronica he was with someone during their break “I fooled around with this horrible girl who meant less than nothing to me, and I couldn’t regret it more.” So I don’t get the whole “I lied,” thing honestly. Other than they were trying to make Veronica more sympathetic with her unreasonable “sexual jealousy” crap. Can’t say as I think it worked.

Maybe it was the whole being shot at, and almost killed, while in Logan’s car, that made Veronica question what Weevil was capable of. While he didn’t do it personally, and denied that he was the one that ordered it, Veronica a.) didn’t know that b.) still has a right to be skeptical is he was telling the truth.

So I personally don’t see Veronica doubting Weevil in the beginning of S2 as a great betrayal of their friendship.

So large corporations’ excuses that treating & paying workers well would damage profits are all a crock of shit.

They totally kick ass. Great products, and happy/efficient workers. The only problem I have ever had with Costco? is my inability to buy just a few items from them. My ‘just necessities’ trips, usually end up with a full freezer, frig., and me re-arranging my pantry space, to optimize for space. For THAT and that alone….damn you Costcoooooo!!!! *insert Khaaaaan reference here*

Ending at the last episode of S2 is usually my advise. So good instincts. S2 is the last good season, and it ends in a nice place for pretty much all the characters. So do that, or just power watch the rest of the series while drinking copiously. It is how I managed to enjoy the other season to the (much lesser) degree I did. Well that massive amounts of FFing (and ignoring everything from S3 episode 13-22 and S4-20). But the copious amounts of drinking when watching, is still key.

Veronica: Logan, I don’t-
Logan: Hey, let me get this out, okay? The other thing…you told me you weren’t built to let people help you.
Veronica: That’s not exactly what I said.
Logan: It’s close. And you know what? I’m not built to stand on the sidelines. I don’t know, I think we have a choice. And I think we can take a tough but survivable amount of pain now…Or stay together and deal with unbearable pain later. So, I vote for the pain now. But I’m always here…if you need anything.

[He kisses her on the forehead.]

Logan: But you never need anything.

TBH, I don’t really “ship” Veronica with anybody (though I do enjoy her interactions with Logan.) But I do love this breakup scene, because it captures so much of what I love about Veronica. She’s so fiercely individualistic, so guarded, so self-sufficient both emotionally and practically, and determined to remain so.

I especially love this breakup because it’s so unusual, where the guy breaks up with the girl because he feels like she doesn’t need him enough, but he can’t just stand on the sidelines and watch her struggle. So often, when it comes up on TV, this type of conflict is implicitly framed as the girl simply not loving the guy enough: he’s her Safety School or Backup, and oh, if only she truly loved him, then she would want to lean on him, etc. But that’s not the case here: this is fundamentally an issue about the kind of person Veronica is.

And that leads to believable, organic conflict with Logan…and what’s great is that the text just lets it be, lets Veronica be. IMO a lot of female characters who are described as “not needing anything” are portrayed as cold, or somehow emotionally stunted, and basically in need of meeting A Great Love so that she will finally ~open up and ~soften, etc. This show doesn’t do that to Veronica. It doesn’t force her to change, never forces her to change, and never implies that she needs to change in the first place. Veronica remains herself. She does sometimes ask for help, when she wants it (and Logan tells her that he will be there, regardless of the breakup, if she needs anything), but for the most part, she never needs anything—and she doesn’t have to need anything, or anyone.

And that’s all kinds of awesome.

I’m going to express this badly, but I actually don’t consider it awesome, and the show rightly doesn’t either. Veronica starts out alone in terms of friends, but she always had a close relationship with her father. Now her lack of friends in the beginning is in part not by choice, but in part, it IS by choice. So Veronica makes the decision to let someone in —Wallace. And later she lets in other people, like Mac and Meg. Meg who basically says ‘you do have friends, Veronica —if you’ll let us be.’ So even Veronica knows that she in fact does need people, her father among them. Humans typically need some degree of interactions with each other, and there is nothing weak or wrong about wanting or yes, even needing other. So sure, the show loves that Veronica is independent and “prickly,” but it also is, rightly, seen as a flaw of hers. Not a fatal one, but it is seen as an issue that Veronica does tend to push people away, because she’s afraid of letting them in too much. It’s an understandable fear given her history, but it’s still not a healthy thing. And certainly not a healthy one with someone she is going to be in a romantic Partnership with. Again, being needed, and needing people, doesn’t make one weak. We all do at times, and in a healthy relationship, you can need other people to be there for you at those times, and you will be there for them when they need you. I mean is it wrong for Logan to need Veronica emotionally? Now granted he might need her too much, which is understandable given his history, but he should be able to need her at all. And she should be comfortable enough to need Logan. But Logan knows that it is in fact an issue of Veronica’s to think she doesn’t need anyone, and to have relationships that exist only on her terms. She does that to Wallace, and she even does it to her father. Logan knows that Veronica has never even told her father she was raped. Now that’s her choice, clearly and her first consideration has to be her health, but it’s not helping her father to not let her be there for him, by keeping things from him. She has also in the past, used her father, which he was upset about for about two seconds. Same with Wallace, and he even left, but it wasn’t really dealt with, or changed, when he got back. But these negative ways of interacting with people as good for her, and supportive as her dad and Wallace arise from the same need to control, the same inability to let others in, the same problem that Logan rightly and should have with Veronica. Veronica is not a healthy partner to Logan, and he finally despite his esteem issues, and desperate need for affection, rightly stops being in an unhealthy relationship with Veronica.’

Which again, it isn’t awesome that Veronica doesn’t get that needing people, especially if you’re going to be in a healthy long-term relationship, is not in fact, a bad thing. And that sharing all the bits — strong, weak, good, bad, is what you should be doing in an equal relationship. But I don’t think Veronica is good at the time of the show, or capable of being in truly open, honest, equal relationship, with anyone, actually. And I think the show actually gets that it isn’t healthy, and rightly treats as such. We as the audience know and understand its origins, but we also should understand that’s it’s not wholly a good thing. And while someone doesn’t need to get “softened” by love, one should get healthier in life. Life is a process of having shit happen to us, and how we deal with it. And all of us do so in a combination of healthy and unhealthy ways. The trick is to try and keep the healthy bits, and work on the unhealthy bits. So not for Logan or any other person, but I do hope Veronica would realize that she should in fact change. Because she isn’t always great to the people around her, and they do deserve better,and it will be better/healthy for her in the long run, as well.

So again, I’m sure I relayed this badly, and this mostly a bunch of typed out word vomit at this point. But as a fiercely independent woman herself, who is proud of being independent, and who honestly does still struggle with this still, I don’t agree with the idea that thinking you don’t want/need anyone is necessarily a good thing. And certainly reject the idea that not changing is a good thing. And Veronica’s not changing? isn’t a good thing on the show, which is fine, because it’s not seen as such.

Although a bit precious, I do like how the pictures in the background are also facing off with each other. And that the backgrounds of the pictures, are echoed, though reversed, by the folders in front of Chuck and Blair. So Chuck’s portrait has a red background, but his folder if dark green. Blair’s folder is red, but the background of the picture behind her is red. Not the most sub-tle use of imagery, but I still like it. At least they tried. Which in later seasons…not so much.

Actually, he’s 16 and having investment ideas. Though to be fair, most 16 year old boys would have the idea in investing in a burlesque club…just most of them couldn’t get the capital to do so. And hey, when you grow up with Blue Chip stocks, and money into your off-shore accounts as your “presents”…business/investments are a part of life.
